"I have lived with my Nan since I was seven. She has helped me a lot.”

Chris is 11 and lives with his 71 year old grandmother, Joan. He has experienced a lot of loss in his 11 years on earth. The overdose of his father at age 4 and his mother being unable to care for him due to drug addiction resulted in him moving in with his grandmother when he was 7. With the safety, stability and care she provided for Chris he really came out of his shell and is progressing well at school and is great at making friends. He loves bowling and basketball. Last year Joan was diagnosed with terminal cancer and is now making plans for Chris to move in with his aunt where he can continue at the same school and in the same basketball team. She has worked hard to make the move as easy as possible for Chris but the grief of losing another loved one will be unavoidable. Chris has found it very hard to watch his grandmother deteriorate and it has resurfaced the feelings of loss associated with losing his father and the absence of his mother. Mirabel will assist Chris to transition to his new home and help him make sense of the grief and loss he has experienced. A specialist education worker will help him to continue to progress at school and Chris’ aunt will be supported in her provision of a safe and nurturing home for Chris.
